In a significant move aimed at easing the compliance burden on taxpayers, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year (AY) 2025–26. The due date, which was earlier set for July 31, 2025, has now been extended by six weeks to September 15, 2025.

Why the Extension?

The CBDT cited several reasons for this extension:

  • Extensive Changes in ITR Forms: The notified ITRs for AY 2025-26 have undergone structural and content revisions aimed at simplifying compliance, enhancing transparency, and enabling accurate reporting. These changes have necessitated additional time for system development, integration, and testing of the corresponding utilities.

  • System Readiness and Utility Rollout: The development, integration, and thorough testing of the appropriate ITR utilities have required more time as a result of the changes.

  • TDS Credit Reflections: Credits arising from TDS statements, due for filing by May 31, 2025, are expected to begin reflecting in early June, limiting the effective window for return filing in the absence of such extension.

Who Benefits?

This extension primarily benefits:

  • Salaried Individuals: Those whose accounts are not subject to audit now have additional time to file their returns.

  • Entities Not Requiring Audit: Businesses and professionals not mandated to undergo an audit under the Income Tax Act.

  • Tax Practitioners: Professionals assisting clients with tax filings can now manage workloads more effectively, ensuring accuracy and compliance.

Key Takeaways

  • New Deadline: September 15, 2025, for AY 2025–26.

  • Applicable To: Individuals and entities not subject to audit under the Income Tax Act.

  • Reason for Extension: Structural changes in ITR forms, system readiness, and TDS credit reflection timelines.

Recommendations for Taxpayers

  • Early Preparation: Utilize the extended timeline to gather necessary documents and information.

  • Consult Professionals: Seek advice from tax consultants to understand the implications of the new ITR forms.

  • Stay Updated: Monitor official announcements for any further changes or updates.
